Right now I am booking up with my, Jenny Puranen Photography, Fall Holiday Mini Sessions for 2020 inn the conjeo Valley area which consists of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Moorepark and Oak Park. I am holding mini sessions during the months of September and October 2020. When I book a mini session most families ask the question what do we wear? The anxiety over this is very real. Even keeping mom's from booking their families session. Since it is also my families time to take our yearly photos, I thought now would be a great time to talk about what to wear. This is something I too put alot of thought and preparation into. Learn here how I go about selecting the outfits for my family.

MY FAMILY PHOTOS WERE TAKEN BY THE AMAZING TRISH AT THE BOHO HOUSE

First always, always, always start with mom's outfit. Just like in real life, in photos mom is the warmth and heartbeat of the photo. Mom can also be the most critical of how she looks in the photos. Mom needs to wear something she feels her best in. Something flattering, and comfortable so she knows she looks good and can focus more on the connection then being self conscious of what she looks like in the photo.

After selecting mom's outfit we step back and look at what we have to work with before continuing on. Does it have a pattern? What color and Hue is it? Then you look at is it dressy or casual? Night time fancy or a walk in the park look. After we have gathered all that information I try and follow these rules while selecting the other family members outfits

  • Not too many patterns - Avoid every family member having a crazy different pattern going on. If mom has a pattern find solids in a similar color or Hue (Cool tones / warm tones) and stick with that

  • Stay with a color that is in season - as a general rule I say summer is pastels and bright cheery colors, In the fall I love Emerald tones. If I am shoot at Joshua Tree or a National Forest I love Fushia's and Emeralds anything that pops out against the forest or boulders. If I am shooting at the beach I suggest pastels and lighter colors even whites if you can pull it off (which I can not lol)

  • Boys stick with a plain colored T, Button down or polo. I love little girls in dresses. If your child refuses to wear these again just stick with what they will be the most relaxed and feel like themselves in.

Next we choose dads outfit. I love Henley shirts on guys as well as an open collar shirt with a t underneath. A polo is always a solid choice. Look at moms outfit and see what color it is. You do not have to pick the exact color. I actually do not like everyone in the same exact color. I try to pick a color that compliments moms outfit, not clash with it. 2 Good tricks for this are to google a color wheel try and select the color opposite on the wheel or (my favorite) got to Pinterest and search fall colors 2020. You can search up color pallets 2020 or Fall mood Boards 2020. This fall I am loving this burnt orange and blue combo so that is what I went with for Dad

Finally comes the kids outfits. This gets easier the further you go down the list of family members. Look through closets and bins of accessories to pull all the colors together for that perfect family photo outfit.

I hope that helps I will finish out the post with some of my other favorite outfit combinations to hopefully help you put together your own outfits for your family photos

This is a good option for a spring photo session or a beach session
