One of the hottest trends in photography that has really boomed over the last few years is the newborn photo session -- and I completely understand why! Who wouldn’t want to memorialize those first precious moments in their little ones' lives? For new parents all across the world, newborn photo shoots have taken on a life of their own. From elaborate outdoor wilderness settings to the cozy and intimate at-home shoots, these pictures have truly begun to break the boundaries of photography.

Here are just a few of the newborn trends you may see - and ones I incorporate based on what parents want!

Hats/Headbands

When it comes to variety and personality, nothing says you’ve got a feisty newborn on your hands better than adorning their gorgeous head with a headpiece. Modern newborn photo sessions almost always have at least one of these hats in their repertoire. From lion’s manes to flower bands -- and everything in between -- I am a firm believer that a newborn with a hat on his or her head can truly steal your heart.

Bundled Up

My favorite modern trend for newborn photography is the ‘bundle.’ Shot while your newborn is perfectly at ease and sleeping, these sessions truly capture the elegant beauty within each child. Placed ever so gently on a pedestal or platform of your choosing – this can be anything from a barrel, stool or even a miniature bed – your newborn is swaddled-up with ultra-comfortable linens, silks and blankets that really make the image pop. I have done this method countless times and am always awe-struck at the end result.

With Siblings

The only thing more precious than photographing a new baby is doing it with big brother and sister nearby. Including the older kids in at least a few of the shots is way to capture this special time for them too.

Letter Board Message

We all have those special dates that hold meaning in our hearts. The day your child is born has to top the list in any parents mind. A new trend with newborn photos has the newborn leaning on or propped up next to a chalkboard-type message announcing his or her date of birth, weight and eye color. I love this idea for baby announcements and memory boxes.

Any and all of these trends make modern photography so much fun to be a part of! I love staying up to date on future and current trends because every added element brings new life to these types of sessions. The most important part is that your newborn looks stunning! Which one of these trends is your favorite and which one will you choose for your next session?
