Congratulations on your upcoming arrival!  The birth of a new baby is one of the most exciting times in your life.  As any parent will tell you, this special time goes by in a blink of an eye. Scheduling a newborn photo shoot is the best way to capture this moment, and I would be honored to help you preserve these memories.

At first, the idea of booking a newborn photo shoot may seem overwhelming and you may have lots of questions.  First, let me assure you that I am highly experienced and value your baby’s safety and comfort above all else. I will provide a calm, soothing atmosphere and I am always happy to pause and take any time you need to feed, change or comfort your baby during the session.

If you are thinking of booking a newborn photo shoot, here is what to expect throughout the process.

When is the best time to take newborn photos?

The best time to take newborn photos is before your baby is 2 weeks old, ideally within the first 9 days.  During this window of time, newborns are more flexible, sleep deeply, and can be placed in the adorable poses you see in our gallery.

It is best to reserve your photo session about 2 to 4 months prior to delivery.  Even though we can’t schedule a specific date at that time, I book a limited number of newborn shoots each month to make sure I can give each the proper time and attention.  Once your baby is born we will work together to coordinate the best day and time for you to come to the studio.

How long will the session last?

Your session will last approximately 3 hours.  Guiding your newborn baby into the poses will take some patience, and we don’t want to rush.  This also allows for time to feed, change, or lull your baby back to sleep as needed during the session.

What do I do to prepare?

Try to relax!  Your baby can tell if you are tense and may not fall into the deep sleep that is best for allowing us to pose him.  If you have any special props that you want to use during the shoot (like a handmade blanket or quilt), lay them out the night before.

Ideally when you arrive, your baby is fed, freshly changed, and sleepy.  If possible, keep him up for an hour or two before the session so he will be tired.  Dress him in a button up sleeper that is easy to remove. The room will be warm - a warm baby sleeps better - so dress yourself accordingly.

What should I bring to the studio?

Bring extra diapers, wipes, and a favorite blanket or stuffed toy for your baby.  A pacifier and/or bottle may prove helpful if we need to lull him back to sleep. Make a list of any specific images you want to make sure we capture and bring along any special props you want incorporated.

If you book a family session, which I highly encourage, bring cream or black shirts for parents and coordinating clothing for siblings.  I would suggest bringing these clothes rather than wearing them in case your baby spits up or has an accident! If older children will be with you throughout the session, bring quiet activities for them to do (coloring books, quiet games, or a tablet with headphones)  while we photograph the new baby.

What happens after the session?

Just after the session I usually share a sneak peek on Facebook.  I know you can’t wait to see the images we captured! It will take me 2 to 3 weeks to sort through all of the images and edit them.  Once I am done, I will call you and schedule an appointment at the studio or in your home to view them. All of your images will be hosted in a private online gallery you can share with family and friends.  During our meeting we can discuss the additional products we have available, such as canvases, birth announcements, and keepsake albums.

Newborn photos taken by a professional photographer become treasured keepsakes.  We would be honored to be a part of this special time in your life. Contact Jenny Puranen Photography for more information on our newborn photography packages.

Jenny Puranen - Hi! That shouldn't be a problem. The price runs $399 and you get digital images. Would you like to schedule a complimentary consult to go over your vision for the photo session?
Thanks,
Jenny
Amie Linville - I’m interested in a smash cake photo session the last week of June.
